METHODOLOGY

The best dog training approach is the one tailored to the dog in front of you. Behavior is nuanced, and there is no true “one-size-fits-all” method for behavior modification. What may be an appropriate consequence for one dog could be unfair or unethical for another. Our role is to help you understand the most effective and appropriate training approach for your individual dog, while also supporting the kind of relationship and leadership style you want to build as an owner.

We believe training should always be fair, clear, and understandable for the dog. Dogs need to know not only which behaviors are inappropriate, but also what to do instead. Our goal is to create confident dogs that can make better choices on their own through consistent communication and guidance.

Our training philosophy incorporates all four quadrants of operant conditioning (read more here), while placing a strong emphasis on classical conditioning to create meaningful behavioral change. By combining these approaches, we build clear communication systems that help dogs feel empowered to make the right choices independently.

LEAST INVASIVE - MINIMALLY AVERSIVE

The LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) model is a training philosophy centered around starting with the least amount of force, pressure, or aversion necessary to effectively teach and modify behavior, while still keeping an open minded approach to increasing pressure when necessary. LIMA trainers prioritize humane, science-based methods by first focusing on management, reinforcement, relationship-building, and clear communication before considering more intrusive interventions. The goal is to create lasting behavior change while protecting the dog’s emotional wellbeing, building trust, and maintaining fairness throughout the training process.
